The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a special operation to clamp down on the use of illegal number plates, seizing 60 vehicles in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) alone.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Hyginus Omeje emphasized that the crackdown is a response to increasing security threats posed by fake number plates, including reports of cloned diplomatic plates.

“The use of fake number plates is a serious concern. Some individuals have illegally created unauthorized plates, which are not recognized by law. We will not allow this menace to continue,” Omeje said.

The FRSC vowed to intensify the operation across major cities in Nigeria, tracing the source of these illegal plates and prosecuting offenders.

ACM Godwin Omiko, who oversees motor vehicle administration, warned that fake number plates pose risks not only to public safety but also to national security.

“Illegal number plates facilitate criminal activities, and we will not hesitate to bring those involved to justice,” he stated.

FRSC officials have now deployed special intervention teams to high-traffic routes nationwide to ensure compliance.
