The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, announced on May 29, 2025, that over four million Nigerians have enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) since 2023, marking a significant milestone in the government’s push for universal health coverage.

The announcement was made during a television interview in Abuja, where Pate highlighted the Tinubu administration’s efforts to expand access to affordable healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations. The NHIS, restructured as the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in 2022, aims to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and improve health outcomes.

The surge in enrollment follows reforms, including the Vulnerable Group Fund, which subsidizes premiums for low-income households, and partnerships with state governments to integrate informal sector workers. Over 1,000 new healthcare facilities have been accredited to provide services, with a focus on rural areas. Pate noted that the Basic Health Care Provision Fund has supported free maternal and child health services, contributing to a 15% reduction in under-five mortality in enrolled communities. The government’s digitalization of NHIA processes has also streamlined registration, enabling over 500,000 enrollments via mobile platforms.

Despite the progress, challenges persist, including limited awareness in remote regions and funding constraints. Critics argue that the NHIA’s coverage remains inadequate, with only 10% of Nigerians insured compared to the 70% target by 2030. Pate acknowledged these gaps, pledging to scale up outreach and address provider payment delays. The achievement has been hailed as a step toward equitable healthcare, but stakeholders urge sustained investment to ensure quality and accessibility. The enrollment drive reflects Nigeria’s broader health reform agenda, with implications for economic productivity and social welfare.
