Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar Condemns Kebbi School Attack

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the deadly attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where gunmen killed the vice principal and abducted several students on Sunday night.

The attackers were said to have stormed the school in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, shooting the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before whisking away the schoolgirls. Security agencies have since launched a manhunt across surrounding forests.

Reacting on Monday, Atiku described the incident as “devastating” and said it was another painful signal of Nigeria’s worsening security situation. His comments were shared through a statement posted on his official X account.

Atiku also referenced a string of recent attacks across the country, including the killing of an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Zamfara State on Saturday, and abductions in Tsafe Local Government Area where entire families were reportedly taken.

He noted that similar incidents in Plateau, Benue, and other states show a national crisis “that has reached intolerable levels,” adding that residents in parts of Kano have also begun fleeing their homes due to fear of escalating violence.

According to him, the spread of killings, kidnappings, and community displacement is eroding public confidence and demands urgent federal intervention.

“Nigeria cannot continue on this path,” he wrote, calling on the government to strengthen the country’s security architecture, deploy more personnel to exposed communities, and scale up intelligence-driven operations. He stressed that citizens “deserve protection, dignity, and peace.”

Security authorities in Kebbi say operations to locate and rescue the abducted students are ongoing, with updates expected as more details emerge.
