President Bola Tinubu honoured Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with the national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and a cash reward of $100,000 for each player, following their record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.

The announcement came during a reception at the Presidential Villa, where Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu, celebrating the team’s 75–68 semifinal win over Senegal on August 02. Additionally, each coach and technical crew member received $50,000, recognizing their role in qualifying for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

Tinubu praised the team, led by Coach Rena Wakama and captain Amy Okonkwo, as role models who unite the nation, with the rewards reflecting their global impact. The gesture, costing an estimated $2.5 million for the 15-player squad and staff, contrasts with past inconsistent athlete support, sparking debate on sustainability amid economic challenges.

Supporters hail it as a morale booster, while critics question funding priorities given the 33.4% inflation rate. The narrative of national pride is uplifting, but its long-term effect on sports development hinges on sustained investment.
