Federal government suspends Twitter in Nigeria indefinitely over the deletion of Buhari's genocide tweet.

The federal government on Friday 4th of June 2021, announced an indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria over the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari genocide tweets.

A press statement released by the office of Minister of information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed accused Twitter of “citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

The press release read: “The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

“The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,

announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are

capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

“The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the

National Broadcasting l Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.

Buhari had posted tweets wherein Buhari spoke about the civil war experience and threatened to deal with those “bent on destroying” Nigeria through “insurrection.”

The tweet reads; “Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand,” he had said.

On Thursday, Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in a media conference said “Twitter in Nigeria is very very suspect.”

As of the time of filing this report, Twitter is yet to respond to any of the accusations or suspension which was also announced by the Federal Government via the same microblogging platform.
