The Nigerian government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance electricity generation and distribution across the country. The initiative includes investments in renewable energy sources, upgrading existing infrastructure, and partnerships with private sector stakeholders.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu stated that the plan aims to provide reliable power supply to boost economic activities and improve the quality of life for Nigerians. The government has earmarked ₦850 billion in the 2025 budget to achieve this goal.
Nigeria has long struggled with erratic power supply, which has hindered industrial growth and economic development. Many businesses rely on expensive diesel generators to sustain operations, increasing production costs.
Experts argue that fixing Nigeria’s power sector requires not only financial investments but also regulatory reforms to encourage competition and efficiency. The new plan includes restructuring the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and implementing a cost-reflective electricity tariff system.
Despite these efforts, some stakeholders remain doubtful, citing previous unfulfilled promises. The success of this plan will depend on the government’s ability to follow through with its commitments and enforce accountability among power sector players.
