The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, over its recent decision to increase subscription fees, sparking outrage among consumers.
In a statement issued by the commission, the FCCPC expressed concerns that the pay-TV provider had unilaterally implemented price hikes without proper consumer engagement, violating regulatory guidelines. Many subscribers have taken to social media to protest the increment, accusing MultiChoice of unfair pricing and exploitation.
FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Babatunde Irukera, stated that the commission is reviewing complaints from consumers and will ensure that MultiChoice operates within Nigeria’s consumer protection laws. He emphasized that the company must justify its price adjustments and explore ways to provide affordable service options.
MultiChoice, on its part, has defended the price increase, citing inflation, rising operational costs, and exchange rate fluctuations as reasons for the adjustment. However, with growing pressure from regulatory authorities and consumer advocacy groups, there is speculation that the company may be forced to review its pricing structure.
The FCCPC has assured Nigerians that it will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to prevent exploitation in the pay-TV industry.
