In a strategic effort to enhance security and regulate the operations of commercial motorcycle riders, commonly known as Okada riders, the Ekiti State Government has launched a Personal Identification Number (PIN) system accompanied by the issuance of reflective jackets.
This initiative aims to monitor and track the activities of Okada riders, ensuring accountability and reducing criminal activities associated with unregistered operators.
The operations of Okada riders have been a subject of concern in Ekiti State due to their association with certain criminal activities. The lack of a structured identification system has made it challenging for authorities to monitor and regulate this sector effectively. In response, the state government proposed a bill in October 2024 to regulate the activities of commercial motorcycle operators, leading to the current implementation of the PIN system.
The newly introduced PIN system requires all commercial motorcycle operators to undergo data capturing, resulting in the issuance of a unique identification number. This PIN is prominently displayed on reflective jackets provided to the registered riders. The reflective jackets not only serve as a means of identification but also enhance the visibility of riders, thereby improving road safety.
