What was supposed to be a joyous celebration of Eid-el-Fitr in Gombe State turned tragic when a stampede at the main Eid prayer ground led to the deaths of two worshippers and left at least 20 others injured.

According to eyewitness reports, the incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of prayers when thousands of worshippers attempted to exit the prayer ground simultaneously. The large crowd, combined with narrow exit routes and heightened excitement, created a chaotic situation, resulting in people being trampled upon.

Rescue teams, including emergency medical personnel and security operatives, rushed to the scene to provide assistance. The injured were quickly transported to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where they are currently receiving treatment. Hospital sources have confirmed that some victims sustained fractures, while others suffered from severe exhaustion and panic attacks.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the stampede, with a focus on improving crowd control measures at future religious gatherings. The Gombe State Government has also pledged to provide support for the families of the deceased and injured victims.

Religious leaders have called for calm, urging worshippers to exercise patience and caution during large gatherings to avoid similar tragedies in the future. This incident highlights the urgent need for better infrastructure and security arrangements at major religious sites across the country.
