Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has signed the state’s Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant step towards achieving universal access to electricity for residents within the next four years. The legislation aims to establish a framework for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity within the state, thereby enhancing energy security and fostering economic development.
The new law empowers the state government to collaborate with private sector entities to develop and operate electricity infrastructure. It also provides for the establishment of the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee licensing, tariff setting, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the law aligns with the state’s industrialization agenda, as reliable electricity is crucial for attracting investments and supporting local businesses. He noted that the legislation would facilitate the development of renewable energy sources, contributing to environmental sustainability and resilience against climate change.
The enactment of this law positions Edo State as a pioneer in sub-national efforts to reform the power sector in Nigeria, potentially serving as a model for other states seeking to enhance their energy infrastructure.
