Diphtheria: King’s College Students Fit for Discharge, Says LUTH

 The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has confirmed that the students from King’s College, Lagos, who were admitted following a diphtheria outbreak, have responded well to treatment and are now fit for discharge.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat, was detected among some students of the prestigious secondary school, prompting immediate medical intervention. The affected students were promptly transferred to LUTH, where they received specialized care, including antibiotic treatment and respiratory support.

Dr. Wasiu Adeyemo, the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, reassured parents and the general public that the hospital had successfully managed the cases, ensuring that the students made a full recovery. He emphasized the importance of early detection, stating that timely medical intervention played a critical role in preventing severe complications.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with LUTH and other relevant health authorities, has intensified surveillance efforts to contain the spread of diphtheria. The outbreak at King’s College sparked concerns among parents and stakeholders in the education sector, prompting calls for schools to implement stricter hygiene measures and ensure that students are up to date on their vaccinations. The Ministry of Education has since pledged to enhance health monitoring in schools across the state.

As the students prepare to reunite with their families, health authorities continue to advise caution, urging parents and school administrators to remain vigilant for any symptoms of diphtheria, such as sore throat, fever, and breathing difficulties.
