Datti Baba-Ahmed Confirms Obi’s Awareness of Abure-Led NEC Meeting Attendance

 Vice Presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed clarified on July 23, 2025, that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, was fully aware of his decision to attend a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting led by Chairman Julius Abure. 

Speaking at a press briefing, Baba-Ahmed addressed speculations following his participation in the July 21 meeting, the first since a 2024 leadership crisis that fractured the party. He emphasized that Obi, a key figure in the LP’s opposition coalition, had been informed and supported the move as part of efforts to reconcile internal divisions, particularly after disputes over Abure’s tenure and financial management allegations.

The meeting, attended by 150 delegates, saw Baba-Ahmed pledge to unify factions, a stance he said aligned with Obi’s vision for a stronger opposition ahead of 2027. However, some LP members question the narrative, pointing to Obi’s absence and past criticisms of Abure’s leadership, suggesting a possible rift or strategic divergence.
