Cynthia Morgan Calls for Reinstatement of Partial Fuel Subsidy to Alleviate Economic Hardship

Singer Cynthia Morgan has called on the Nigerian government to reconsider its complete removal of fuel subsidies, proposing that a 50% subsidy be reinstated to alleviate the financial struggles of citizens. Speaking in a video shared on Instagram, the musician expressed concern over the rising cost of living, which has worsened since fuel subsidies were eliminated.

Morgan admitted that, at first, she supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to remove subsidies. However, she now believes that the sudden withdrawal has created severe economic hardship. “The truth is, I didn’t realize how much it would affect us. Now, I’m feeling it just like everyone else, and I believe the government needs to reconsider its decision,” she said.

She acknowledged that maintaining subsidies is costly, noting that Nigeria previously spent over $8 billion annually on them despite earning around $20 billion in total revenue. However, she argued that removing subsidies entirely without an alternative plan has made essential goods and services unaffordable for many Nigerians.

Morgan warned that if the government fails to intervene, crime rates may rise as people struggle to survive. She encouraged citizens to join her in appealing to the authorities for a compromise, suggesting a 50% subsidy reinstatement as a fair middle ground.

Her comments have sparked discussions about how best to address the economic impact of subsidy removal while ensuring sustainable government spending.
