The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on July 30, 2025, issued a stern warning against underage and multiple registrations during the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, set to end September 30.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, speaking at a public sensitization event, reported 500 cases of suspected underage registration and 300 multiple attempts since June, using biometric data to flag offenders. Violators face a ₦500,000 fine or 12 months imprisonment under the Electoral Act 2022.

The CVR, targeting 5 million new voters for 2027, has registered 2.5 million, but concerns persist over enforcement in rural areas, where 40% of registrations lack proper age verification. Civil society groups praise the biometric system but call for mobile units to curb fraud.

The narrative of electoral integrity is critical, with INEC’s success hinging on public compliance and resource deployment ahead of the 2027 polls.
