Crisis in PDP Over for Now, Says Wike

 Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on August 04, 2025, declared that the internal crisis plaguing the party has subsided for the time being, offering a cautious note of optimism amid ongoing political turbulence. 

Wike, a key member of the G5 group that challenged the PDP leadership in 2023, attributed the temporary truce to recent reconciliatory efforts following the party’s loss in the 2023 elections and the formation of an opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He acknowledged that while factional disputes, particularly between his camp and that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have eased, unresolved issues, such as the allocation of leadership roles and the party’s strategy for the 2027 elections, remain critical hurdles.

Wike’s statement comes after months of public spats, including his alleged support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 campaign, which alienated many PDP loyalists. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has initiated dialogue, with a recent meeting on July 30 producing a roadmap to unify factions, though details remain vague. 

Critics argue that Wike’s influence, bolstered by his ministerial position, may be a strategic move to maintain leverage within the PDP, especially as some members defect to the ADC. The narrative of a temporary ceasefire is fragile, with the party’s ability to address lingering grievances, particularly over zoning and funding, likely to determine its cohesion as the 2027 election approaches, a period when political alliances are already shifting.
