The Nasarawa State High Court in Lafia sentenced gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging on June 26 for the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. Justice Simon Aboki delivered the verdict, convicting Ajayi of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which mandates the death penalty.
Ajayi, arrested on January 12, 2025, in New Karshi, was apprehended while attempting to dispose of Adaidu’s severed head at his residence in the Papalana axis. Prosecutors presented forensic evidence, including DNA traces and phone records, alongside witness testimonies, revealing Ajayi’s motive: jealousy over Adaidu’s alleged interactions with other men. Ajayi confessed to the crime, admitting he acted impulsively after discovering her chats, showing no remorse. Adaidu, serving at Nicon Insurance in Abuja, was buried on January 14 amid national outrage over her death.
The case has intensified debates on gender-based violence, with Nigeria recording 1,200 such cases in 2024. Ajayi’s defense counsel, Umaru Yunisah, plans to appeal, arguing procedural errors, while the prosecution hailed the ruling as a deterrent.
The verdict highlights safety concerns for NYSC members, prompting calls for enhanced security at corps lodges. Ajayi’s background as a church chorister has shocked communities, with demands for stricter vetting of public figures. The appeal process is expected to begin in Q4 2025, potentially delaying execution.
