The Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned a legal tussle involving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to September 22, 2025, over allegations of violating party rules.
The case, filed by a faction led by former Imo State governorship candidate Emeka Ihedioha, accuses Anyanwu of mismanaging N300 million in party funds and failing to convene mandatory National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings since 2023.
Ihedioha’s group seeks Anyanwu’s removal, citing his alleged role in the PDP’s loss of 2 million votes in the 2023 elections due to poor coordination. Anyanwu’s defense, led by Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, argues the accusations are politically motivated to weaken the PDP’s southern bloc ahead of the 2027 polls. The court, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, granted the adjournment to allow both parties to submit additional evidence, including financial audits and NEC meeting records.
The dispute threatens PDP’s unity, with 15 state chairmen backing Anyanwu and 10 supporting Ihedioha. The party, which secured 25% of votes in 2023, faces challenges in rebuilding its 15 million-strong voter base. Analysts warn that prolonged infighting could cede ground to the APC, especially in Imo, where PDP controls 10% of local councils. A resolution is critical before the PDP’s planned Q4 2025 national conference to set its 2027 strategy.
