Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi on July 24, 2025, declared that leaders of the newly formed opposition coalition, including the Labour Party and African Democratic Congress (ADC), will back whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate for 2027.
Speaking at a coalition summit, Amaechi, a prominent figure after his fallout with the APC, emphasized unity to counter the ruling party’s dominance, citing the coalition’s combined 15% vote share from 2023.
The pledge follows internal negotiations to select a candidate, with Amaechi positioning himself as a potential contender. Coalition partners, including Peter Obi’s faction, have yet to commit fully, raising questions about cohesion.
The narrative of solidarity is promising, but rivalries and differing ideologies, evident in past election disputes, could undermine the pledge, with success hinging on a transparent selection process.
