A Christian advocacy group has renewed calls for the Federal Government to take decisive action in securing the release of Leah Sharibu, the schoolgirl who was abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in 2018 and has remained in captivity for over six years.
The group, in a recent statement, expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to secure Sharibu’s freedom despite multiple assurances and negotiations. They emphasized that her prolonged captivity is a stain on Nigeria’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of its citizens.
Sharibu was one of the 110 girls kidnapped from Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, in 2018. While others were later released, she was reportedly held back for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. Her continued captivity has sparked national and international outrage, with many calling on the government to intensify rescue efforts.
The advocacy group urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to take immediate action and ensure that Sharibu, along with other abducted individuals, is safely reunited with her family. “It is heartbreaking that six years later, Leah is still in captivity. The government must act now,” a spokesperson for the group stated.
Human rights organizations have also joined in demanding urgent intervention, stressing that Nigeria must prioritize the safety of its citizens and hold perpetrators of such kidnappings accountable.
