Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has reignited football’s long-running “greatest of all time” debate after naming Lionel Messi as his ultimate pick, despite once sharing a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus.
The Italian international’s honest admission has set social media alight, drawing reactions from fans who continue to argue passionately over the two superstars who have dominated football for nearly two decades.
Speaking in a recent interview, Chiesa reflected on his time alongside Ronaldo in Turin and described the Portuguese captain as an incredible teammate and a relentless professional. Yet, when pressed to choose between the two legends, he leaned toward Messi’s natural genius.
‘Messi is the Greatest in History’
“Playing with Cristiano was amazing,” Chiesa said. “Messi and Cristiano are the best players in history. But to be completely honest, I have to say Leo Messi is the greatest player in history.”
The 26-year-old winger, who joined Liverpool after his spell at Juventus, had first-hand experience of Ronaldo’s discipline and hunger for goals. During their time together in Italy, Ronaldo’s leadership and unmatched fitness set a standard that inspired the entire squad.

Still, Chiesa believes Messi’s artistry and effortless control of matches give him a unique edge. The Argentine’s balance, vision, and ability to dictate the tempo of play, he said, make him the more complete player. His view joins that of several other players who, despite admiring Ronaldo’s determination, continue to regard Messi as the sport’s purest talent.
Ronaldo Responds as Debate Continues
Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has never shied away from the GOAT discussion. In a recent appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner dismissed criticism from former teammate Wayne Rooney, who has repeatedly said Messi is the superior player.

“No problem… I don’t agree. I don’t want to be humble,” Ronaldo said with a smile when asked about Rooney’s comments.

Both icons are now in the twilight of their illustrious careers, Messi leading Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, and Ronaldo continuing to break records in the Saudi Pro League. Yet, even as new stars rise, their rivalry still commands global attention.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, fans may get one last glimpse of the two greats on football’s biggest stage. And while statistics may never settle the debate, Chiesa’s words remind everyone that even those who’ve shared the pitch with Ronaldo can’t help but bow to Messi’s magic.
