The family of former President Muhammadu Buhari returned to their Kaduna residence on July 27, 2025, 12 days after his burial in Daura, Katsina State, on July 15, following his death on July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

The discreet return to the fortified Sultan Lane home, guarded by military personnel, marked the end of a period of mourning that included traditional Islamic rites and a state funeral attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and over 5,000 mourners. The family had remained in Daura to fulfill post-burial obligations, including a week-long prayer session led by local imams.

The former president’s passing at age 82, after a prolonged illness linked to a 2017 medical trip, prompted national reflection on his eight-year tenure, particularly his security and anti-corruption efforts. Local reports from Kaduna indicate a subdued atmosphere, with neighbours noting the family’s preference for privacy, while state officials prepared a condolence register.

The narrative of personal loss transitions to a public legacy assessment, with no immediate political shifts, though the North’s leadership vacuum is a topic of discussion among political analysts from the Centre for Democracy and Development.
