In a significant political shift, several former ministers from President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). This move underscores growing discontent within the APC ranks and highlights the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape.

Notably, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai publicly announced his defection to the SDP on March 10, 2025, citing a departure from the APC’s founding ideals as his primary motivation. El-Rufai revealed that his decision was made with the full knowledge and approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari. In an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai stated, “I left the APC with his full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision to leave the party because I consult with him on all my matters.”

Following El-Rufai’s departure, reports have emerged suggesting that other prominent political figures are considering a similar move to the SDP. These figures include former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, and former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. Pastor Tunde Bakare, who contested the APC presidential primary against President Bola Tinubu, is also reportedly among those planning to switch to the SDP.

These defections and potential realignments indicate a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, with the SDP emerging as a formidable platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political analysts suggest that this wave of defections could signal a broader realignment within Nigeria’s political sphere, as politicians seek platforms that resonate more with their visions for national development.
