The body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari departed London on a Nigerian Air Force aircraft at 8:00 AM WAT on July 15, 2025, en route to Daura, Katsina State, for burial later today.
The repatriation, overseen by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, followed Buhari’s death on July 13 at a London clinic after a prolonged illness. The aircraft, escorted by diplomatic security, is expected to land in Katsina by 2:00 PM, where funeral prayers are scheduled at the Daura Central Mosque at 4:00 PM, adhering to Islamic rites.
Hundreds of mourners gathered at Heathrow Airport, with Nigerian diaspora leaders laying wreaths, while British authorities ensured a smooth exit. President Bola Tinubu, who declared a seven-day mourning period and a public holiday, confirmed the body’s departure, noting Buhari’s 82 years, including his 2015-2023 presidency.
The journey marks the end of a medical odyssey that saw Buhari spend over 200 days abroad since 2017, fueling debates on Nigeria’s healthcare, as the aircraft carries his legacy back home amidst national grief.
