President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a Federal Government’s Team to negotiate with Twitter over the suspension of the microblogging platform in Nigeria.
The committee headed by Minister of information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed announced this on Tuesday. The committee will discuss the term of operation of Twitter in Nigeria to gear towards lifting the ban of the microblogging platform.
The team also comprises the Attorney General of the Federation and Honourable Minister of Justice, Honourable Minister
of Communications and Digital Economy, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Honourable Minister
of State for Labour and Employment and other relevant
government agencies.
Recall that the Buhari-led federal government had indefinitely suspended Twitter’s operations over “activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence,” as charged by Lai Mohammed after President Buhari tweets were deleted off the platform.
Meanwhile, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court Abuja against the Federal Government and Minister of information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for directing television and radio stations to delete their Twitter accounts.
You will recall Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) had ordered all broadcasting firms to suspend the use of Twitter across Nigeria.
In the suit numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/496/2021 and filed at the weekend by its lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare, Kehinde Oyewumi and Opeyemi Owolabi, the group is seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the current administration and the regulator from “censoring, regulating, licensing and controlling the social media operations and contents by broadcast stations and activities of social media service providers in Nigeria.”
Although, the hearing days for the case is yet to be fixed.
Do you think this committee has enough knowledge about how Social media works?
Do you think the Nigerian government should include a social media expert in the committee?
