Bruno’s Penalty Miss Costs United as Brentford Dominate at GTech

Brentford

Manchester United’s turbulent season took another hit on Saturday as Brentford secured a commanding 3-1 win at the GTech Community Stadium, leaving Ruben Amorim under even more pressure to steady the ship. Igor Thiago’s first-half brace and a stoppage-time strike from Mathias Jensen highlighted a ruthless Brentford display, while Bruno Fernandes’ penalty miss proved a turning point for the visitors.

Keith Andrews’ Brentford side came out firing from the first whistle, immediately putting United’s back line under pressure. Their intensity paid off after just eight minutes when Jordan Henderson delivered a perfect long pass over the top, allowing Thiago to break free and slot calmly past Altay Bayındır for the opener.

Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Brentford kept their foot on the gas. The hosts forced Bayındır into two sharp saves, denying headers from Sepp van den Berg and Nathan Collins in quick succession. But United’s resistance was short-lived. In the 20th minute, Thiago was again in the right place at the right time to sweep home from close range, doubling Brentford’s lead and sending the home crowd into raptures.

Manchester United eventually found a response. New signing Benjamin Šeško got on the end of a clever pass and lashed a clinical strike past Caoimhín Kelleher to halve the deficit. The goal offered Amorim’s men a glimmer of hope heading into the break, but the visitors still looked second best in most areas of the pitch.

Fernandes Misses Penalty as Jensen Seals the Win

United emerged from the interval with renewed urgency, dominating possession and probing for an equaliser. Their big chance came when Bryan Mbeumo was hauled down inside the box, earning them a penalty. Captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up, but his effort was saved, his second miss of the season, dealing a psychological blow to the team just as momentum seemed to swing their way.

The miss deflated United’s push, and Brentford seized the opportunity to kill off the contest late on. Deep into stoppage time, Mathias Jensen capped off a superb team performance by curling a fine strike past Bayındır, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

The result leaves Manchester United languishing in mid-table with just one win in six league matches, while questions over Amorim’s tactics and team selection are growing louder. For Brentford, the victory underlines their impressive start to the season and their ability to trouble the league’s biggest sides with direct, high-energy football.
