Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking one of the most significant political crossovers of the year.
He announced the move on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ gathering at the Government House in Port Harcourt, ending months of speculation surrounding his next political alignment.
The governor, who has been at the centre of prolonged tensions with powerful interests in the state, signalled that the decision was tied to what he described as a “new phase” in Rivers politics. His declaration was greeted with applause from party loyalists present at the meeting, many of whom had earlier switched allegiance to the APC.

Fubara’s departure from the PDP is not entirely surprising. His feud with former allies triggered a long-running power struggle that reshaped the political atmosphere in the state.
While he previously avoided confirming rumours about his next steps, Tuesday’s announcement effectively ends his long-standing association with the party under which he rose to prominence.

His move also places Rivers State, one of the most politically strategic states in the south, firmly in the centre of national conversation, especially as the APC consolidates its influence across the region.
