A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu on the first of seven terrorism charges leveled against him.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Thursday, citing evidence presented by the prosecution, including video interviews in which Kanu allegedly made violent threats against Nigeria and its citizens.

Kanu’s courtroom behaviour during the session was described as unruly. He interrupted proceedings, questioned the legality of the charges, and accused the judge of bias. Following these disruptions, Justice Omotosho allowed the trial to continue in Kanu’s absence.

The presiding judge noted that while defendants have a constitutional right to be present during trial, repeated misconduct can permit the court to proceed without them. “If a defendant misconducts himself or acts in an unruly manner during the course of his trial, his trial can be conducted in his absence,” the judge said, adding that the courtroom is a “temple of justice.”

The prosecution had urged the court to continue proceedings without Kanu, emphasizing the need to maintain order and allow justice to take its course.

Thursday’s ruling marks the first conviction in Kanu’s long-running trial, which involves seven counts of terrorism. Justice Omotosho also dismissed three fresh motions filed by the IPOB leader, describing them as unmeritorious.

Kanu, who has faced multiple legal battles since his 2015 detention, is yet to present a defence. The court indicated that subsequent sessions will address the remaining charges and possible sentencing.

The trial has drawn significant national and international attention, reflecting concerns over separatist agitation and security challenges in southeastern Nigeria.
