Brazil Great Ronaldo Sells Majority Stake In Valladolid

Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário, a two-time World Cup winner and former Real Madrid striker, has sold his majority stake in Real Valladolid, a Spanish La Liga club he has owned since 2018. The sale, announced in May 2025, marks the end of Ronaldo’s seven-year tenure as the club’s president and majority shareholder, during which he transformed Valladolid’s fortunes.

Ronaldo, who initially acquired a 51% stake for €30 million, increased his ownership to 82% over the years, overseeing the club’s promotion to La Liga in 2022 and stabilizing its financial and competitive standing.

The majority stake was sold to a consortium of Spanish and international investors for an undisclosed amount, though estimates suggest the deal could be worth over €100 million, reflecting Valladolid’s improved market value. Ronaldo cited personal and strategic reasons for the sale, stating his desire to focus on other ventures, including his ownership of Brazilian club Cruzeiro. During his tenure, Valladolid achieved promotion to La Liga twice, invested in youth development, and upgraded its José Zorrilla Stadium. Ronaldo’s business acumen and global brand helped attract sponsorships and elevate the club’s profile, though relegation battles in recent seasons drew criticism from some fans.

The sale has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters acknowledging Ronaldo’s contributions but expressing uncertainty about the club’s future under new ownership. The consortium has pledged to continue Valladolid’s growth, with plans to invest in infrastructure and player recruitment to ensure competitiveness in La Liga. Ronaldo, who remains a beloved figure in Spain, expressed gratitude to Valladolid’s fans and vowed to remain a supporter. The transaction reflects a broader trend of high-profile footballers transitioning from ownership roles to other entrepreneurial pursuits, with Ronaldo’s legacy at Valladolid defined by his bold vision and tangible achievements.
