Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Deputy National Chairman, has downplayed the impact of recent defections on the party’s stability, asserting that the PDP remains a formidable force in Nigerian politics.

Addressing journalists in Lagos, George acknowledged that some members have defected to parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party, particularly in states such as Kano, Rivers, and Abia. However, he attributed these exits to individual political ambitions rather than systemic weaknesses within the PDP.

George emphasized the party’s commitment to rebuilding its grassroots structures and rallying its base ahead of the 2027 general elections. He called on PDP leaders to close ranks and focus on addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic hardship and insecurity, through people-centered policies.

The PDP stalwart expressed confidence in the party’s ability to weather internal and external pressures, citing its historical resilience and widespread national presence. George also urged the party’s National Working Committee to accelerate reconciliation efforts and engage younger members to bolster its appeal. While defections have sparked concerns among some PDP supporters, George’s remarks aim to reassure the party faithful that the PDP is well-positioned to compete in future electoral contests and deliver on its promises to Nigerians.
