Beirut Airport to Close for Four Hours During Funeral of Slain Hezbollah Leader

Lebanon’s civil aviation authority has announced that Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport will close for four hours on Sunday, February 23, 2025, during the funeral procession for slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

“The airport will be closed, and takeoffs and landings… will halt from 12:00 pm (1000 GMT) until 4:00 pm,” the authority said in a statement carried by official media on Tuesday.

Nasrallah, a prominent and influential figure in Lebanon, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs on September 27, 2024, as Israel escalated its campaign against the Iran-backed group following almost a year of cross-border hostilities initiated by Hezbollah.

The funeral will also be held for Hashem Safieddine, a senior Hezbollah figure who had been chosen to succeed Nasrallah, before he too was killed in an Israeli raid in October.
