Armed bandits struck along the Zugurma-Ibbi–New Bussa Road in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday, September 29, abducting Ahmed Mohammed, popularly known as Barrister Ahmed Lawyer, a Commissioner with the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission, his driver, former SUBEB Chairman Mohammed Bawa Niworu, and dozens of other travellers.

The attack occurred in the early hours of the day near Ibbi National Park, with victims reportedly returning from Borgu when the gunmen struck. Eyewitnesses disclosed that the bandits blocked the highway ahead of a police checkpoint before ambushing motorists along the Ibbi-Bussa route. The victims’ vehicle was later found abandoned by the roadside, with mobile phones and personal belongings left inside.

Attack Details and Victims

A source familiar with the incident told Channels Television that several travellers were seized during the attack. “At least three Sharon buses loaded with passengers were taken away by the bandits to unknown locations,” the source said. Many passengers fled into nearby bushes while others were left stranded along the highway.

A police tactical team engaged the attackers, successfully repelling the bandits. However, one officer sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed that a patrol vehicle was riddled with bullets during the gunfire exchange.

Authorities have been mobilising additional tactical teams in collaboration with local vigilante groups and other security agencies to track down the kidnappers. SP Abiodun stated that efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend the suspects.

Security Response and Investigation

The Niger State Police Command said investigations into the incident are ongoing. Tactical units and joint security teams are conducting operations along the region’s highways and surrounding areas to ensure the safe release of the abducted individuals and prevent further attacks.

Residents along the route have been urged to exercise caution and provide timely information to security agencies regarding any suspicious movements or activities. Local vigilante groups have also been actively participating in the search for the bandits.

This incident adds to a growing trend of highway kidnappings in Niger State, where bandit groups continue to exploit major roadways, targeting travellers, commercial vehicles, and government officials. Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring the safe passage of motorists across vulnerable routes.

Authorities continue to appeal to the public for cooperation in providing intelligence that could lead to the rescue of the abducted Electoral Commissioner, the former SUBEB Chairman, and other victims. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing into the identities and operational bases of the bandits responsible for Monday’s attack.
