Badagry-Seme Corridor Accounted for 35% of Smuggled Fuel – Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has disclosed that the Badagry-Seme corridor accounted for a staggering 35% of all smuggled fuel in recent months, highlighting the persistent challenge of illicit fuel exportation.

This revelation underscores the role of Nigeria’s porous borders in the continued diversion of subsidized petrol into neighboring countries, where it is sold at higher prices.

Customs officials stated that their intensified surveillance operations have led to multiple arrests and seizures of illegally transported fuel along the border. Smugglers have reportedly devised new tactics, including concealing petrol in hidden compartments of vehicles and using backwater routes to evade security checks.

The NCS has called for enhanced border security measures, collaboration with neighboring countries, and stricter penalties for smugglers. Analysts warn that without a comprehensive strategy to curb fuel smuggling, Nigeria’s efforts to stabilize domestic petrol prices and conserve revenue will remain compromised.
