Awujale of Ijebuland for Burial Today — Ogun Govt

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after a 65-year reign, will be buried today, Monday, July 14, at 4:00 p.m. at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, as confirmed by the Ogun State Government.

The monarch’s death, announced by Governor Dapo Abiodun, coincided tragically with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, amplifying national grief. Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960 at age 26, was a descendant of the Anikinaiya ruling family and brought modern governance to Ijebuland, notably through the Ojude Oba festival’s international prominence and educational endowments at Olabisi Onabanjo University.

The burial, guided by Yoruba customs, will feature a procession and traditional rites, with the state government urging residents to pray for the royal family. Security has been tightened around the palace, expecting thousands of mourners, including dignitaries like President Tinubu, who mourned Adetona as a “towering natural ruler.”

The cause of death remains undisclosed, pending a family statement, but his legacy of unity and progress is widely celebrated. The timing of his burial, overlapping with Buhari’s postponed rites, has prompted logistical adjustments, with local leaders coordinating to honour both figures respectfully.
