Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a scathing condemnation of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of orchestrating a violent and unlawful takeover of local government secretariats in Osun State.

In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), Atiku described the incident as an “assault on democracy,” alleging that the APC deployed armed thugs to forcibly seize control of all 30 local government council secretariats. He decried what he termed as a “blatant disregard for democratic principles,” accusing the ruling party of using intimidation and violence to achieve political dominance.

“Nigerians witnessed a brazen act of lawlessness yesterday, as the Tinubu-led APC revealed the true extent of its desperation to cling to power—resorting to political thuggery and a total subversion of democracy,” Atiku declared.

He commended the people of Osun State for resisting the alleged forceful takeover, hailing them for standing firm against what he described as APC’s “rampaging foot soldiers.” According to Atiku, the people of Osun had demonstrated their commitment to protecting their democratic rights and would not bow to intimidation.

“Let it be known that Osun State will never surrender to anti-democratic forces. The people have spoken loudly and clearly—they refuse to allow their electoral mandate to be stolen, regardless of the level of coercion thrown at them,” he stated.

Atiku further called on security agencies to remain neutral and professional in the lead-up to Saturday’s elections. He urged them to resist any pressure to serve as tools for what he termed the APC’s “criminal agenda.”

“The world is watching. These are perilous times for our democracy. The APC has dropped all pretenses of legitimacy and has fully embraced brute force as a political strategy,” he remarked.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to stay vigilant and to actively defend their democracy against what he described as a growing threat to national stability.

“The people want governance, not anarchy. Nigerians will not sit back and watch as their democratic rights are trampled upon by a power-hungry regime determined to plunge the nation into chaos. Enough is enough,” he warned.
