Aston Villa finally broke their winless run in the Premier League with a commanding 3-1 victory over Fulham, ending weeks of frustration and lifting themselves out of the relegation zone. The win, coming at home in front of an expectant Villa Park crowd, was Unai Emery’s first league success of the campaign after five disappointing results.
The match was a test of character for Villa, who had failed to register a win in their opening five games. Pressure had begun to mount on the players to deliver, and the early stages suggested another difficult afternoon might be in store.
Fulham struck within three minutes, catching Villa cold and silencing the home supporters. Raúl Jiménez rose highest in the box to head past Emiliano Martínez, giving Marco Silva’s side the perfect start.

Despite the early setback, Villa began to take control of possession, slowly working their way back into the game. Their persistence paid off before halftime when Ollie Watkins equalised with a composed finish, sparking celebrations and shifting the momentum firmly in Villa’s favour.
Dominant Second-Half Display
After the interval, Villa came out with renewed confidence and took full control of proceedings. Their attacking play became more direct and purposeful, forcing Fulham’s defence to stay pinned back. Just four minutes after the restart, John McGinn surged forward from midfield and unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the area, sending Villa Park into raptures and putting the hosts in front for the first time in the match.
Barely two minutes later, Villa extended their lead. Watkins turned provider, whipping in a precise cross from the left that was met by Emiliano Buendía inside the box. The Argentine’s first-time finish left Bernd Leno helpless and effectively sealed the result with more than half an hour still to play.

Fulham attempted to respond by pushing more players forward, but Villa’s backline, marshalled confidently by Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa, held firm. The visitors managed to create a few half chances late on, but their inability to convert left them without a route back into the contest.
Villa Climb Clear of Relegation
The win was significant for Emery’s side not only in terms of morale but also for their standing on the league table. After a slow start that had left them in the relegation zone, the three points propelled them upward and offered some breathing space heading into the next round of fixtures.
For Fulham, the defeat ended a promising run that had seen them climb into the top half of the table. Silva’s men remain 10th with eight points, but their inability to hold onto an early lead will raise questions about defensive concentration and game management away from home.

Aston Villa will now hope that this victory serves as the turning point for their season. With key players like Watkins and Buendía finding the net and McGinn showing leadership in midfield, the signs are positive that the team can build momentum. Their next fixture provides another opportunity to climb the table, and Emery will be eager to see his side maintain the intensity that earned them this crucial win.
