APC Sweeps Lagos LG Polls

 The All Progressives Congress (APC) has achieved a sweeping victory in the Lagos State local government and councillorship elections held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, clinching all 20 local government chairmanship positions and all 37 local council development area seats, according to the official results announced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Sunday, July 13. 

The triumph, which mirrors the party’s clean sweep in the 2021 elections, unfolded across 13,325 polling units despite a reported voter turnout of just 12%, a figure that has sparked concern among electoral observers. Key victories included Kolade Alabi’s landslide in Alimosho, where he secured 85% of the vote, and similar dominant performances in Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe, reflecting the APC’s entrenched political machinery under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership.

The election, conducted with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to enhance transparency, saw Sanwo-Olu and other top officials like Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and Speaker Mudashiru Obasa cast their votes early, setting a tone of participation. 

However, opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Action Congress (AAC), have lodged formal complaints, alleging widespread irregularities such as voter intimidation, delayed material distribution, and the disenfranchisement of voters in areas like Ojodu and Ikotun, where polling units opened late. 

LASIEC has dismissed these claims as unsubstantiated, citing the technological safeguards and the presence of thousands of security personnel who maintained order under a movement restriction from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The APC’s dominance has been attributed to its robust grassroots network and control of state resources, but critics argue the low turnout, down from 11% in 2021, undermines the mandate’s legitimacy, prompting calls for an independent review.
