On June 2, 2025, the All Progressives Congress (APC) launched a fierce critique against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, labeling them “desperate power seekers” during a press briefing in Abuja.
The trio, speaking at Amaechi’s 60th birthday event on May 31, accused President Bola Tinubu of weaponizing poverty through economic reforms like fuel subsidy removal, which has driven inflation to 40%. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka dismissed their claims, arguing they failed to address poverty during their 24 collective years in office from 1999 to 2023, instead engaging in “rent-seeking” and asset sales to cronies.
Morka defended Tinubu’s policies, citing $24 billion in oil investments and a shift to a production-based economy as evidence of progress. The APC highlighted Amaechi’s remark, “I’m hungry,” as a symbol of personal ambition rather than genuine concern, noting his failure to secure votes for Buhari in 2015. Atiku and El-Rufai’s coalition talks for 2027 were branded self-serving, with Morka asserting Nigerians see through their tactics.
The trio’s critics, including Minister Nyesom Wike, accused them of plotting a “coup-like” removal of Tinubu, escalating APC’s internal tensions. Public reactions are polarized, with some praising Tinubu’s reforms and others decrying rising living costs, as food prices have doubled since 2023.
