British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua is in stable condition following a fatal road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday, according to the Ogun and Lagos state governments.
In a joint statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinlade, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, authorities confirmed that Joshua and another passenger were evacuated to a medical facility in Lagos after the crash. Doctors said both patients are stable and do not require emergency medical intervention, while a full medical team continues to monitor them.
The accident occurred around 11:00 a.m. in the Makun area of Ogun State when an SUV conveying four people, including the 35-year-old former world heavyweight champion, collided with a stationary truck along the heavily trafficked expressway. Two occupants of the vehicle were confirmed dead.

Authorities disclosed that Joshua was conscious after the incident and has been in communication with his family. Videos circulating on social media showed the boxer being rescued from the wreckage, appearing injured as emergency responders and bystanders assisted at the scene.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by excessive speed and dangerous overtaking. According to the agency, the Lexus SUV was suspected to have been travelling beyond the prescribed speed limit when it lost control during an overtaking maneuver and crashed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described over speeding and wrongful overtaking as leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways, while extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing Joshua a speedy recovery.

The Ogun and Lagos state governments also expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have commenced. They appealed to the public to respect the privacy of Joshua and his family as he continues medical observation.
The incident comes just days after Joshua’s widely publicized knockout victory over Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed bout in Miami.
