Amnesty International Urges Nigerian Government to Cease Intimidation of Critics

Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian Federal Government to halt all forms of threats and intimidation directed at individuals and groups expressing dissenting opinions about the administration.

This appeal comes in light of recent allegations involving a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, who reportedly faced harassment after criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s government over escalating inflation and economic challenges.

In a statement released on March 16, 2025, Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the alleged actions against Uguamaye, emphasizing that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right protected by both the Nigerian Constitution and international law. The organization asserted that voicing dissenting views should not be met with threats or violence.

The controversy began when Uguamaye publicly criticized the government’s handling of the economy, highlighting the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians due to rising inflation. Following his comments, reports emerged of NYSC officials allegedly sending threatening messages to him, warning against further criticisms.

Amnesty International’s statement further highlighted the importance of protecting individuals who speak out against perceived injustices, noting that such actions are vital for a healthy democracy. The organization urged the Nigerian authorities to respect the rights of citizens to freely express their opinions without fear of retribution.

This incident has sparked discussions about the state of freedom of expression in Nigeria, with many advocating for the protection of individuals who hold the government accountable through constructive criticism. The Nigerian government has yet to respond to Amnesty International’s statement.
