Atletico Madrid produced a scintillating performance at the Civitas Metropolitano, hammering Real Madrid 5-2 to hand their city rivals their first defeat of the LaLiga season. Julian Alvarez was the star of the show, netting twice as Diego Simeone’s men overturned an early deficit to claim a famous derby victory.
Fast-Paced First Half Ends All Square
The clash lived up to its billing from the very first whistle as Atletico made a blistering start. Their relentless pressing paid off in the 14th minute when Robin Le Normand powered home a header from a corner to ignite the home crowd.

Real Madrid, however, were quick to respond and displayed the composure that has seen them start the season unbeaten. Kylian Mbappé equalised just 10 minutes later with a composed finish, silencing the Metropolitano briefly. Arda Güler then struck a superb goal in the 36th minute to put Los Blancos in front, seemingly shifting the momentum in their favour.
But Atletico refused to let the game slip away. Just before the interval, Alexander Sørloth rose highest to meet Marcos Llorente’s cross, restoring parity with a thumping header. The first half ended 2-2, setting the stage for a dramatic second period.
Alvarez Turns the Derby on Its Head
The second half belonged entirely to Simeone’s men, who emerged from the tunnel with renewed energy and aggression. Their efforts were rewarded six minutes after the restart when Julian Alvarez calmly converted from the penalty spot after Llorente was brought down inside the box.

With the stadium rocking, Atletico kept their foot on the accelerator. Alvarez struck again in the 63rd minute, finishing off a lightning-fast counterattack to make it 4-2 and send the home fans into a frenzy. Real Madrid, chasing the game, pushed men forward but found themselves repeatedly undone by Atletico’s sharp transitions and compact defending.
The victory was sealed deep into stoppage time when substitute Antoine Griezmann coolly slotted past Thibaut Courtois to make it 5-2, capping off one of Atletico’s most dominant derby displays in recent years.
The emphatic result not only ends Real Madrid’s unbeaten start but also sends a statement across LaLiga that Atletico Madrid are ready to mount a serious title challenge. Simeone’s men have now scored 11 goals in their last three league games, while Madrid boss Xabi Alonso will be left to ponder defensive lapses that proved costly on the biggest stage.
