The All Progressives Congress (APC) named Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori as acting national chairman on June 27, following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who stepped down citing health concerns after a tumultuous tenure.
Ganduje, former Kano State governor, formally resigned in a letter to the National Working Committee (NWC) through National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support since assuming the role in 2023.
Dalori, previously the Deputy National Chairman (North), takes over pending a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for July 2025 to elect a permanent chairman. Ganduje’s exit follows a contentious stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe on June 22, where party members criticized his failure to unify APC’s 20 state chapters, particularly in the North-East, which holds 30% of the party’s votes. The resignation also fuels speculation about a potential return of Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ganduje’s rival, to strengthen APC’s northern base for the 2027 elections, where the party aims to secure 70% of Nigeria’s 90 million votes.
Dalori, a Borno State politician with a decade in the House of Representatives, vowed to mend internal rifts, focusing on reconciling factions in Kano and Rivers. The APC, controlling 60% of Nigeria’s governorships, faces challenges from opposition coalitions led by Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai. Critics, including PDP’s Debo Ologunagba, argue Ganduje’s exit reflects Tinubu’s strategy to neutralize northern opposition, risking a one-party state. Dalori’s immediate priorities include a nationwide membership drive targeting 5 million new members and resolving disputes over Kano’s 2024 emirate crisis, which cost APC 10% of its voter base.
