Following his coronation on April 5, 2025, at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo, the newly installed 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has articulated his commitment to restoring the ancient Oyo Palace and initiating programs aimed at youth empowerment and cultural preservation.

The coronation ceremony was a grand event attended by dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, marking the culmination of traditional rites that began with the “Oro Ipebi” on March 7, 2025.

In a statement released by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Oba Owoade emphasized the significance of the over 200-year-old palace, which had suffered considerable damage due to a fire incident in January 2024. He expressed a resolute determination to restore the palace to its former glory, highlighting its importance as a symbol of Yoruba heritage and pride.

Beyond the physical restoration of the palace, Oba Owoade outlined his vision for the socio-economic development of Oyo Kingdom. He announced plans to introduce vocational training and digital skill acquisition programs aimed at empowering the youth, thereby addressing unemployment and discouraging the trend of seeking opportunities abroad. The Alaafin also expressed his intention to enhance cultural festivals such as the Sango and Oranmiyan festivals, recognizing their role in promoting tourism and preserving Yoruba traditions.

Oba Owoade’s ascension to the throne has been met with optimism, with many hoping that his reign will usher in an era of peace, unity, and prosperity for the Oyo Kingdom.
