Governor Umo Eno has urged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to Akwa Ibom to avoid travelling at night throughout their service year, stressing that their personal safety must take priority at all times.
He gave the warning on Tuesday during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch C orientation programme in Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai Local Government Area.
Represented by Emmanuel Akpabio, director of youth development in the Ministry of Youth Development, the governor advised the corps members to rely only on reputable transport companies and resist the temptation to embark on late-hour journeys.
He noted that moving after dark increases the risk of security incidents and that corps members must remain alert, cautious and deliberate about their safety decisions.
Mr Eno said corps members whose trips extend beyond early evening should pause their journey and stay temporarily at safe locations, such as corps lodges, police stations or military barracks.
“Night travel is dangerous. Please avoid it, no matter how urgent it may seem,” he said, adding that they should always share their real-time location with family and friends when travelling.
He also reminded them to board vehicles only at designated motor parks with proper manifests and to put to use the emergency numbers and security tips provided during the orientation course.

Beyond safety concerns, the governor encouraged the corps members to respect local cultures and play meaningful roles in their Places of Primary Assignment by contributing to civic enlightenment and community development.

Earlier, NYSC state coordinator Sam Pepple said the corps members demonstrated discipline and leadership capacity throughout the orientation, adding that the exercise had prepared them for the tasks ahead.
