Airtel Nigeria has announced an increase in its data and call rates, leaving subscribers frustrated and concerned about the rising cost of communication services.
The telecommunications giant, in a message to its subscribers, attributed the price adjustment to escalating operating costs, including the rising cost of diesel to power its base stations and the general inflation in the country.
The tariff hike has been met with a wave of complaints from Airtel subscribers, many of whom are already grappling with the effects of inflation. Social media platforms have become a hub for subscribers to voice their displeasure, with some threatening to switch to other networks.
Airtel, while acknowledging the inconvenience, maintains that the price increase is essential to maintain the quality of its network and ensure continued reliable service delivery. The company also points to the increased investments it’s making in network upgrades and expansion.
This move by Airtel is likely to put pressure on other telecommunication companies to follow suit, potentially leading to a widespread increase in data and call tariffs across the industry.
