Prominent Nigerian figures have paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, lauding his “selfless service” to the nation. Among the voices are Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, who thanked Buhari for his support during Adesina’s 2019 re-election, highlighting his leadership and patriotism.

Former Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed praised Buhari’s anti-corruption stance and infrastructure projects, such as the Lagos-Ibadan Railway. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the loss as a “profound national tragedy,” emphasizing Buhari’s resilience and commitment from his military days to his 2015-2023 presidency. Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, acknowledged Buhari’s discipline and dedication despite policy disagreements.

Other tributes include former President Goodluck Jonathan, who defeated Buhari in 2011 but lost to him in 2015, calling him a “selfless leader of discipline,” and ex-Military President Ibrahim Babangida, who lauded his modesty post-retirement. The outpouring reflects a broad spectrum of political perspectives, from allies to rivals, converging on Buhari’s intent to serve, though opinions diverge on outcomes like the 63% poverty rate by 2023 per World Bank data.

These statements, issued via official channels on July 13-14, underscore a national effort to honor his legacy, with plans for a state funeral in Daura gaining momentum as mourners prepare for Tuesday’s rites.
