Abuja Rent Crisis: Landlords and Tenants Clash as Prices Surge to ₦2 Million

Tenants in Abuja are facing severe challenges as rent prices for self-contained apartments skyrocket, reaching between ₦1.5 million and ₦2 million.

The rising cost of living, inflation, and expensive building materials have contributed to this housing crisis, forcing many residents to relocate to the outskirts of the city.

A resident of Utako, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that her rent increased from ₦700,000 to ₦1.2 million, prompting her to consider moving to areas like Karu, Kubwa, or Lugbe. Similarly, Chika, a tenant in Mabushi, expressed frustration over the exorbitant rent prices, stating, “I was hoping to move somewhere newer, but all I see are ridiculous prices—₦1.5 million, ₦2 million, even ₦2.5 million for a self-contain.”

Landlords, however, justify the increases by citing the rising cost of construction materials. Property owner Festus Onuoha explained, “The prices of cement and imported fittings have increased by over 150%, making it difficult to keep rents low.”

With no government intervention in sight, Abuja’s rent crisis continues to worsen, leaving tenants struggling to afford housing.
