Abaribe Urges Gowon to Write His Own Book, Reveal Hidden Truths About 1966 Coup

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has challenged former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, to personally document his account of Nigeria’s political turmoil, particularly the events surrounding the 1966 coup.

Abaribe, in a recent speech, stated that Gowon owes the younger generation an honest and detailed narrative about the country’s past, especially as Nigeria continues to struggle with political divisions linked to historical events.

“General Gowon was at the center of some of Nigeria’s most defining moments. It is time for him to tell his story in his own words. The younger generation deserves to hear directly from him,” Abaribe declared.

The 1966 coup, which led to a series of political upheavals, remains a sensitive topic in Nigeria’s history. While several accounts exist, Abaribe insists that Gowon’s perspective would provide crucial insights and clear longstanding misconceptions.

Although Gowon has previously addressed aspects of Nigeria’s civil war in interviews, Abaribe’s challenge has sparked renewed debate on the need for first-hand documentation from key historical figures.
