
The incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on December 24, 2025, within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council area of Borno State. The headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai said preliminary investigations showed that a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device inside the mosque.
In a statement, the spokesperson of the Theatre Command, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said the attacker died instantly along with two civilians at the scene. He added that several worshippers sustained injuries of varying degrees during the blast.

Security forces, including troops of Operation Hadin Kai, the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, other security agencies, officials of the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency, were immediately deployed to the area. The site was secured and cordoned off to prevent further casualties.

According to the army, 32 civilians were initially injured and taken to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment. Two of the injured victims later died in hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. The remaining injured persons are said to be stable and receiving medical care.
The army assured residents that security has been reinforced across Maiduguri and surrounding areas, especially during the festive period. Surveillance and patrols have also been intensified to prevent further attacks and reassure the public.
