2027 Polls: Coalition Directs Atiku, Obi, Others To Join ADC

Coalition Chooses ADC As Political Platform

Nigeria’s opposition coalition movement has instructed its members to resign from their current political parties and fully join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This resolution came from a closed-door meeting on Thursday, presided over by ADC’s interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark. The coalition said it had also suspended every process for the registration of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), which it earlier applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for approval.

Speaking after the meeting, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the coalition is committed to presenting a single, credible opposition candidate against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“All members agreed to support whoever wins the ADC presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Abdullahi said.

Among those present at the meeting were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Anambra governor Peter Obi, and former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal.

Atiku confirmed his attendance via a post on X, calling the gathering “a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land.”

He added that the coalition’s goal is to offer Nigerians a credible alternative and restore hope in governance.

Atiku’s Break With PDP

Atiku officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July 2025, citing irreconcilable differences and accusing the party of straying from its founding principles. His resignation letter, addressed to his ward chairman in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, signaled the end of his long association with the PDP.

While Peter Obi has been part of the coalition since its early stages, he has yet to formally announce his defection from the Labour Party to ADC.

Political watchers say Thursday’s resolution could accelerate Obi’s formal move, as the coalition seeks to consolidate its forces before the campaign season begins.
