The much-anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival officially commenced in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, drawing athletes, dignitaries, and sports enthusiasts from across the region for an exhilarating display of sporting excellence and cultural heritage.


The opening ceremony, held at the Uyo Township Stadium, was a spectacle of colors and energy, featuring traditional performances, musical displays, and an exhibition of the rich cultural diversity of the Niger Delta. The event was graced by top government officials, sports administrators, and notable personalities.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, in his keynote address, emphasized the importance of sports as a unifying factor in the Niger Delta and a tool for youth empowerment. "This festival is not just about competition; it is about celebrating our shared identity, discovering young talents, and fostering regional cooperation," he said.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which played a key role in organizing the festival, expressed its commitment to investing in sports as a means of promoting peace and development in the region. The Commission's Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, noted that the festival provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and potentially earn national and international recognition.

Athletes from the nine Niger Delta states, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Ondo, Abia, and Imo, will compete in various sporting events, including football, athletics, boxing, swimming, and wrestling. Special emphasis has also been placed on traditional sports unique to the region, such as canoe racing and local wrestling.

A major highlight of the festival is the "Rising Stars Initiative," which aims to identify and support exceptional young talents with scholarships, training programs, and opportunities to compete at higher levels.
